A large cast-iron bell from a temple. Shanxi province, 19th century or before. Height 42 cm, diameter 29 cm. There is no tongue inside. Most of this type of bells were simply struck with a piece of wood. The simple decoration in thin lines on the top is most typical for the 19th century, although it might be earlier than that. The loop feels very smooth from wear. Condition: good patina with superficial oxidation on the outside. A somewhat stronger oxidation on the inside (not cleaned). Clear sound and no damage.
