Two-door cabinet with single drawer originating from a temple, Shanxi province, first half 18th century. The compact proportions and the division of the panelwork still breaths the old Ming style, although the lacquer-techniques used make it more probable this cabinet was made shortly after 1700. The front is finished with an old red layer of lacquer over an older dark layer. Original hardware. The sides are finished in a greyish-black layer of clay-lacquer. The drawer is replaced with the use of old material. The shelf-board is original. One side-beam of the roof is replaced.

Two-door roundcorner cabinet, Shanxi province, first half 18th century. Front and sides black lacquer on clay over textile lining. The inside is finished in a orange-red lacquer. Hardware is part original, partly replaced. The lacquer on the centre-post between the doors is restored. The door-frame’s moulding is repeated on the front of the cabinet. The doors turn on wooden pivots (repaired). It’s a typical example of the grey area that the change of style from Ming to Qing actually has been. Type and model in general and the use of textile lining are elements that could be called Ming. The kind of red lacquer used on the inside is also not uncommon for Ming cabinets. Other elements however, such as the addition of a clay layer on the textile and the spandrels at the sides between the legs, are so typical Qing that it is fair to say that this style already has the upper hand here.

Two-door cabinet with two drawers inside, Shanxi province, Linfen county, middle / second half 18th century. Frontside black lacquer over a layer of clay. On the doors a painting of playing children. The sides are finished with a dark layer of clay-lacquer that is largely intact. The inside is finished with an orange layer of clay-lacquer. Original hardware. Part of the apron between the front legs is replaced. Despite cracks and damages to the lacquer it is a nice and original specimen in it’s kind. Cabinets from this period are often problematic due to the bad lacquer-techniques and unstable underlayers commonly used. Waxed.

A pair of goldlacquered cabinets, Shanxi province, Pingyao style, Qianlong period (1736-1795). The painting on the front is heavily restored, one could say repainted. Still everywhere parts of the original painting are incorporated in it and one took great care to follow lines and motives of the old painting. The problem with this type of lacquerwork is that it is manytimes strongly darkened and, especially the gold, faded and worn. One can still see what kind of representation it has been, but the glitter and glamour of gold on red has gone. One knows what it must have looked like, can follow the lines, can see what once must have been shining in gold. A temptation that cannot be stopped takes hold, just a few lines! and the whole proces is started. Like this most of this kind of cabinets get repainted. One side of one cabinet is wharped. One bottom replaced. One shelfboard replaced and the other partially. One part of a back is replaced. The hardware is replaced mainly using old parts.

Two-door cabinet with three drawers at the top, Shanxi province, second half 17th century. The paneled front and the top end drawers are typical for the Ming-period. It would be safer though to date it early Qing dased on details such as the flat spandrels on the sides, the lacquer and the type of hinges used. The front is finished in an old black laquer which might not be the first state; there are previous layers under it of which the oldest is black as well. The laquer that must have covered the sides is gone altogether. The inside doesn’t show any trace of finishing layers of lacquer. There is one shelf under which a big storage-compartment which can be closed by two sliding doors. The wrought-iron hinges are partially original but most is replaced. The sturdy brass hardware on the drawers and doorlocks is original though the cross-placed lockplates on the doors are missing- less one strip. The spandrel between the legs on the front is missing.

In addition darker colors are used to create an illusion of depth. The single panels on the sides are finished with a black lacquer. The left side panel is furthermore decorated with a painted medaillon which is an indication that this cabinet was once the left placed piece of a pair. The inside is finished as well with a black lacquer. There are two shelves under which is a storage compartment which can be closed with a slide.
